The summer of 2015 was a breath of fresh air after the long winter of the previous year.
Once the sun cast its rays to warm Europe, the coming days decided that adventure is upon us.
Along with Jo Hempel, a man who seizes new opportunities with open arms, and creates new ones wherever possible, I spent 3-weeks touring Germany with Gorilla Deutschland, stopping at, at least, 5 cities on the way.
We passed the ethereal Alps mountain range, as we swiftly traveled through Austria. Next stop, experimenting with skateboarding – badly – in a deserted Slovenian skate park. Then, my first Manu Chao concert!
After the short couple-of-days break in Slovenia, work was upon us again. But this time, no filming for long hours and attempting to edit in the wee hours of the night. This time, it’s back to leisurely work on a coastal city filled with nude, painted, smiling, loving people – It’s Goulash Disko by the Adriatic, somewhere high on a cliff, at Fort Punt Christo, Pula, Croatia.
Next morning till the end of the festival, that lasted long after the stages were shut down and most bands had left, the festivities started with colorful people all around. Concerts happening on a few different stages, lasted till 10:00 am the next morning and picked up pace as the sun cooled, leaving the humid air sticking to our skin all day and night.
During one of those lazy dusk days, we came across Melissa Lara Clissold, a reincarnation of Janis Joplin. A Turkish Janis Joplin playing in Croatia to an international audience. The entire band shook the solar stage like a swaying leaf on a tree. No one could hold back to the grooves of Zeytin.
Some of the few friends we made along the way, are GypsySka Orquesta. We were lucky to catch them during their European tour.
Jo decided it would be a good idea to take them out on a photo shoot, and he did. He found an abandoned building in Štinjan, near the Fort Punt Christo, where he took out his Hasselblad and elegantly clicked its old shutter away wearing his Cleptomanicx… boxers!
Some say the world has become a village in modern age, I say it has always been a spec of a world.
DJ Nickodemus was playing at Oshtoora music festival in Egypt, back in April 2015. To my luck, we crossed paths again at Goulash Disko, where we enjoyed the company of rare human specimens and watched the sun perform a glorifying exit.
A few of the well-embraced, unspoken rules of Goulash: Sing, Dance and Get Naked, are like a silent oath. Gypsy Disco embrace that oath like a religion. A stage group of beautiful freaks whose performances didn’t seem like performances, but more of celebrations of life.
The pictures do them no justice, at all. Each of the group’s personal presence on stage, had its flavor. You just could not keep your eyes off of them…
And so, I leave you the best for last. The muse of the night. The goddess of Fort Punt Christo…
